Made to Last: Caring for Printed Tees, Hoodies and Totes

We print on heavyweight combed cotton and brushed fleece because those fabrics hold a print cleanly and get better with age. Whether yours still looks good in three years comes down to how it is washed. None of this is complicated — it is mostly about heat and friction, the two things that destroy a print.

The short version

• Turn inside out before washing, every time.
• Cold water, 30°C / 86°F or below.
• Gentle or delicate cycle, low spin.
• Mild liquid detergent — no bleach, no fabric softener, no powder.
• Air dry flat or on a wide hanger, out of direct sun.
• If you must iron, iron inside out and never over the print.

Why cold water matters

Heat is what breaks down the bond between ink and fibre. Hot cycles soften the print film, and every hot wash after that lifts a little more of it. Cold water cleans cotton perfectly well for normal wear, uses less energy, and keeps cream fabrics from taking on a grey cast.

The fabric softener problem

Softener works by coating fibres. On printed cotton that coating sits on top of the print, dulls the finish and traps residue that eventually causes cracking. If you want softness, use half the recommended detergent and add a splash of white vinegar to the rinse instead.

Drying is where most damage happens

Tumble dryers combine the two things prints hate: heat and constant abrasion. Air drying takes a few hours and adds years. Lay heavier hoodies flat so the shoulders do not stretch; hang tees on a wide hanger rather than a wire one. Keep everything out of direct sunlight — strong sun fades navy and yellows cream.

Caring for hoodies specifically

• Wash with similar weights. A hoodie tumbling against jeans and zippers will pill.
• Never wring the fleece. Press water out gently instead.
• Reshape the cuffs and hem while damp so the ribbing keeps its snap.
• Store folded, not hung, once fully dry — hanging heavy fleece stretches the shoulders over time.

Canvas totes

Spot clean first: most tote marks come out with cold water and a drop of mild soap on a cloth. If a full wash is needed, do it cold and alone, then air dry flat while pulling the bag back into shape. Never tumble dry canvas — it shrinks unevenly and warps the handles.

Mugs

Our mugs are dishwasher safe, but hand washing keeps the print crisp for far longer. Avoid abrasive scourers and skip the high-heat sanitising cycle.

Storing between seasons

Make sure everything is completely dry, fold with the print facing inward, and store in a breathable cotton bag rather than plastic. Plastic traps moisture and can yellow cream cotton over a long summer in storage.
